Chemical Peel Sarasota, FL

Each time we step outside, we are exposed to numerous factors that are damaging the skin. While we may not notice the effects on a daily basis, it is important to know that those factors are mainly responsible for dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, and breakouts. Our bodies try to diminish these effects by shedding the damaged layers of the epidermis, but sometimes this simply is not enough. This is where chemical peels come in and help us to shed those damaged cells faster.

A chemical peel treatment at American Dermatology Associates in Sarasota, FL, is a chemical solution that is applied to the face and neck to slough away dead skin cells and improve the overall appearance of the skin. Chemical peels reveal new, younger skin for a smoother, more youthful look.

Am I a candidate for a chemical peel?

  • Individuals with darkly pigmented skin should be very cautious about having chemical peels. This is because there is a significant chance that it may cause a change in the pigment of your skin.
  • You cannot have a chemical peel if you have an active bacterial, viral or fungal infection; if you have a history of keloids; if you have facial dermatitis; or if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients.
  • You cannot have a VI Peel® if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; if you are allergic to aspirin, hydroquinone, or phenol; if you have used Accutane in the past 3 months; if you have active cold sores, infection, warts, or open wounds; if you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation; or if you have an active autoimmune disease.

How to prepare for a VI PEEL®

You will need to discontinue use of retinoid creams for 2 weeks prior to the peel. People who get cold sores should start on antiviral medications prior to treatment to prevent reactivation of cold sores.

What to expect during my VI PEEL® treatment

After thoroughly cleansing your skin, it will then be prepared with a Prep wipe that comes with the VI Peel®. Then the chemical solution will be applied topically to your skin. You will leave with the peel still on your skin.

How long do chemical peels take?

A chemical peel typically takes 15-20 minutes to perform.

Depending on which peel you receive, you may experience some tingling, stinging or burning during the treatment. If needed, a fan will be provided to keep your skin cool. After the peel, your skin may appear red like a sunburn and it will feel tight.

Is there any downtime following the treatment?

With VI Peel® there is little or no downtime. Peeling lasts 3 to 7 days and is easily managed with the post-peel kit that is included with the peel.

Does my VI PEEL® require aftercare?

The VI Peel® comes with a take-home kit that you will use for the first 3 days following your peel. For 14 days after the peel, it is best to avoid exfoliating products like glycolic acid and retinol/retinoid. You need to avoid direct and prolonged exposure to the sun. You must not peel the skin off.  It is important that you let it peel naturally or you can damage the new skin and cause scars.

Side effects of chemical peels?

The most common side effects are:

  • Peeling
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Tightness

Rare side effects could include allergic reactions, blistering or scarring, and reactivation of herpes simplex infections.

When will I see results from the VI PEEL®?

Once your skin has completely recovered and is finished peeling, you will notice a visible improvement in your complexion. Your skin’s appearance should continue to improve for the next 4 to 6 weeks, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier, and more youthful looking.
