What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure used to remove unwanted body hair. This non-invasive procedure removes hair through a series of treatments that specifically target the pigment in the hair without damaging skin and tissue. Patients can enjoy long-term hair removal from nearly any area of their body with this safe, convenient procedure.
What can I expect during a Hair Removal Treatment?
You may experience the sensation of a rubber band snapping the skin during the procedure, which is usually well tolerated. Multiple treatments will be needed in order to achieve optimal results since hair grows in cycles. One treatment will not destroy all of the hair follicles.
Does it work on all hair colors?
Laser hair removal works best on dark hair. It does not effectively treat blonde, red, white, or gray hair since it lacks the dark pigment needed to act as a target of the laser.
How many treatments are needed for Laser Hair Removal?
An average of 6-8 treatments is required for maximum results. Maintenance treatments will be needed.
Is it Permanent?
No, Laser Hair Removal is not permanent. There is no 100% guaranteed permanent hair removal method, only permanent hair reduction. Even electrolysis does not result in permanent hair removal.
How long does the treatment take?
A laser hair removal treatment takes from 15-60 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Laser hair removal feels like an elastic band being snapped on your skin repeatedly. It is uncomfortable but tolerable.
Is there any downtime?
You may resume normal activities after laser hair removal. You may experience some redness and swelling in the treated area. These symptoms usually subside within a few days. Sun avoidance is required after laser hair removal.
What are the side effects?
Laser hair removal is a safe non-invasive procedure with minimal side effects. Common side effects included are redness and swelling of the treatment area. Other rare but possible side effects include lightening or darkening of the skin, scarring, blistering, and re-growth of hair. People who get cold sores (herpes simplex infections) should start on antiviral medications prior to treatment to prevent reactivation of cold sores if receiving treatment in an area where a previous outbreak has occurred.
How do I prepare?
Before your first session, it is important for you to avoid waxing, tweezing, and use of depilatory creams for six weeks. During this time period, shaving, or cutting the hair with scissors is acceptable. You MUST stay out of the sun. Any tanning of the skin can result in a change in the pigment of your skin in the treated area.
Who cannot have the treatment?
You cannot have laser hair removal if you have used depilatory creams or sprays in the last six weeks; if you have tanned skin, or used a tanning lotion or spray in the last 2 weeks; if you have a history of scarring, epilepsy, or seizure disorder, certain skin diseases; or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
