A Gift that Keeps Giving: Why Help Animals?

I’m taking a different path with the blog this month. Instead of discussing ways to improve your skin, I’m going to discuss how to improve your life and the lives of others. This is a subject that has been close to my own heart. There are so many homeless pets in this country. Those who rescue animals are the unsung heroes in our community. They give of their time and love to help these innocent creatures. Through their efforts, animals come out of their shell and blossom into wonderful companions. But it takes time and dedication. However, once they transform from sad abandoned animals into grateful companions, it will fill your heart with joy. You will know you did something great for helpless animals who couldn’t help themselves. It doesn’t take much to change their lives for the better, and in exchange, you get a loyal companion for life.

Not only will you get endless unconditional love from your pet, but you will also gain social, mental and physical benefits from owning a pet. Studies have shown that pet ownership lowers stress levels by elevating serotonin and dopamine levels, thus making you feel good and relaxed. It also has been found that owning a pet can decrease your blood pressure as well as cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They are also great exercise buddies. The love that you bestow on them is reciprocated 100 fold. Owning a pet also helps combat depression. It gives you a purpose in life. Someone needs you and depends on you. You have to get up in the morning and feed and take care of them. They are totally dependent on you. Also, it’s a great way to teach children about responsibility and time management. Pets also help you mix and mingle with other people. You can make new friends who have the same interests as you. They also offer good protection for people living alone.

The Humane Society is dedicated to helping animals and needs our help. They rely on donations and help from the community. If you can’t have a pet of your own or can’t afford to give money, you can still help. You can go to the Humane Society and walk the dogs or play with the cats to help socialize them. Especially this time of year, let us think of others and help them. No community benefits from having terrified starving animals roaming the streets. Let’s help them and they will help us. I have saved close to 20 animals in my life and I have never regretted it! I felt moved this year to do a special donation drive called “Fillers for Fido.” I have vouched to give anyone who donates new blankets, pet food, and pet toys $50 off each syringe of Juvederm products. Just a small incentive for a much bigger cause. There is something that is so rewarding about helping those that can’t help themselves. Join me this Holiday Season in support of Sarasota County’s furry orphans.

I wish everyone Happy Holidays and a great New Year!
